Legislators: Tell Governor Christie to Make the Full Pension Payment
Governor Christie’s plans to cut more than $2 billion from the state’s pension obligation do more than just rob the system of much-needed funds – it breaks his promise to the people of New Jersey to stop the fiscal games that threaten the state’s economic health. After more than a decade of fiscal mismanagement from governors of both parties, the pension systems for today’s public employees and retirees are running deficits of more than $50 billion. In 2011, steps were taken that were supposed to correct the problem and put the pension systems back on solid ground – but only if the state lived up to its end of the bargain and stopped ignoring its obligations. As a public employee, I have never skipped a pension payment – and I am paying even more into the system with every paycheck. The least the state can do is pay its share, too. When you make a deal, you’re supposed to honor it, not toss it away. The budget cannot be balanced on the backs of the workers whose futures have already been shortchanged by more than $50 billion. The state has given wealthy companies more than $4 billion in tax cuts that haven’t created jobs – it’s time we invested in the jobs and people that actually make the state work. Keep your promises, no more budget gimmicks! PLEASE FIGHT FOR A BUDGET THAT INCLUDES A FULL PENSION PAYMENT! Sincerely,
