American Library Association: Put Filters on Public Library Computers
The purpose of this petition is to protest the American Library Association's (ALA) direct support of the distribution of hardcore, possibly obscene pornography in public libraries across America. The ALA favors the distribtion of pornography via library computers, as has been made clear by numerous public statements, advice given to public library administrators, as well as materials on the ALA website. At a minimum, the ALA is opposing Internet filters that would block pornography in public libraries. All girls, boys, women, and men have a natural human dignity and thus a right to live lives free from sexual exploitation. All pornography is degrading, dehumanizing, exploitive, and a violation of this right. All pornography is a serial attack on human dignity, identity and worth. Therefore, obscenity, hardcore, adult pornography has no place in the public square, much less the public library. Public libraries are a domain for learning and education. To think that a child or anyone else can access obscene material in a public library is an obscene thought in itself. There have been several cases of child sexual abuse images (child pornograph) being downloaded onto library computers, and even cases of sexual assault in libraries where the offender had a history of watching pornography on library computers. We petition that pornography filters be added to computers in public libraries and pornographic materials be removed from the shelves of public libraries.
