Pass Voice for Drivers Legislation

The City of Seattle does big things.  We were the first large city to pass Paid Sick and Safe Leave.  We put the #Fightfor15 on the map by passing, unanimously, a $15 minimum wage that paved the way for efforts in other cities.  And we have a long and proud tradition of supporting worker rights to collectively bargain. 
Now we have an opportunity to enact precedent-setting legislation that will serve as a model to others in ensuring workers in the new economy are treated with dignity and respect.
Drivers in Seattle's for-hire industry now earn as little as $3 per hour.  Companies can change any condition of work overnight, including disallowing the very cars it convinced drivers to invest their life savings in.  And companies can fire drivers at any time for any reason, including speaking out about their pay or working conditions. Without swift action, drivers will head into the slowest season of the year facing more uncertainty and economic instability.
A proposed ordinance before you would fix this unjust situation.  It would allow drivers to negotiate these and other critical matters directly with for-hire companies.
It is time to act on this now and not delay.  Drivers, their families and their communities are struggling now, and have waited long enough.  With every decision to draw out the process, real people in our City are being hurt.
Pass this legislation and give our drivers the voice they deserve.  Thank you.
