STOP Anti-Abortion Bills in House Calendars Committee

ACTION ALERT:

More bills targeting access to abortion have passed out of the House State Affairs Committee.

LWV-TX OPPOSES all of these bills:

  • HB 35 (Cook) requires burial or cremation of fetal tissue
  • HB 200 (Burkett) bans the donation of fetal tissue from abortion clinics for scientific research.
  • HB 1936 (Springer) prohibits any government entities from directly or indirectly providing financial benefits to abortion providers and their affiliates
  • HB 2962 (Capriglione) requires additional extensive reporting related to abortion complications by licensed abortion facilities.
  • HB 434 (Simmons) that allows health professionals to withhold information from parents about the condition of the fetus

These bills must be stopped in the House Calendars Committee, where they have now been sent.

ACTION:

Contact Representatives on the House Calendars Committee and ask them not to advance these 5 bills.

TALKING POINTS APPLICABLE TO ALL OF THESE BILLS:

  • Texas women deserve and demand access to reproductive health and rights which these bills aim to restrict and stigmatize
  • Abortion is a safe medical procedure that is already heavily regulated in Texas
  • There is nothing more private to a woman than the right to regulate her own fertility. Politicians should not dictate her reproductive choices.

BILL-SPECIFIC TALKING POINTS:

  • HB 35 and HB 200: The addition of these non-medical mandates concerning disposal of fetal tissue has nothing to do with the safe practice of modern medicine. The requirements serve only to interfere with the patient’s autonomy and decision-making in her own medical care.
  • HB 434: A woman has the right to be truly informed when making decisions about her pregnancy. This bill jeopardized the doctor-patient relationship by allowing doctors to omit critical information from conversations with their patients.
  • HB 1936: The scope of this bill is vast and could result in more clinic closures and deny critical preventive reproductive health care to many women, particularly low-income women, young women and women of color.
  • HB  2962: Abortion in Texas already has robust reporting systems in place
