Aand resolutionWHEREAS, The theme of World Water Day 2025 is glacier preservation, emphasizing the need for global action to recognizemanage Marchmeltwater 22,sustainably 2025,and asreduce Michiganemissions, Watersecuring Day.vital water resources for the future;

Whereas,and SinceWHEREAS, 1993,The Great Lakes State was shaped by glaciers, and the UnitedGreat NationsLakes hasthemselves designatedcontain March20 22percent asof Worldthe Waterworld’s Day;surface freshwater that is not locked up in glaciers;

and Whereas,WHEREAS, TheFreshwater themesupplies ofdrinking Worldwater, Waterwater Dayto 2025grow iscrops glacierand preservation,support emphasizingindustry, thewater need for global action to managesupport meltwaterrecreation, sustainably and reducewater emissions,essential securingto vitalfish, waterwildlife, resourcesand forhealthy theecosystems; future;

and Whereas,WHEREAS, TheIn Greatthe Lakespast, Statethe wasfailure shapedto byprotect glaciers,water andcaused theextensive Greatsurface Lakeswater themselvesand containgroundwater 20contamination percentin ofMichigan, theleading world’sto surfacecleanup freshwatercosts that iscould nothave lockedbeen upprevented; in glaciers;

and Whereas,WHEREAS, EvenMichigan’s inboundaries water-richinclude Michigan,approximately there38,000 aresquare residentsmiles withoutof accessGreat toLakes clean,surface safe,water and affordablebottomlands, water,an underscoringendowment thethat needstate forgovernment continuedis statecharged andwith federalprotecting investmenton inbehalf ourof waterthe infrastructurepublic systems;according to the public trust doctrine;

and Whereas,WHEREAS, TheWater abundanceis of water that characterizes Michigan confers a dutyhuman onright, allintrinsic residents of the state to conserveevery andaspect protect freshwater as guardians of thislife; legacy for future generations;

and Whereas,WHEREAS, Michigan’sIndigenous boundariescommunities includein approximatelyMichigan 38,000and squareacross milesNorth ofAmerica Greathave Lakeslong surfaceheld water andas bottomlands,sacred anand endowmentintegral thatto statelife, governmentemphasizing isthe chargedimportance with protecting on behalf of thesustainability publicand accordingrespect tofor thenatural publicresources; trust doctrine;

andnow, Whereas,therefore, Waterbe isit aRESOLVED humanBY right,SENATE, intrinsicThat tothe everymembers aspect of life;this legislative body recognize March 22, 2025, as Michigan Water Day;

and Whereas,be Indigenousit communitiesfurther inRESOLVED, MichiganThat andwe acrosscommit Northourselves Americato havethe longpromotion heldof waterpublic asawareness sacred and integral to life,prevent emphasizingour theprecious importancewater offrom sustainabilitypollution and respectdepletion. for natural resources;

now, therefore, be it Resolved by Senate, That the members of this legislative body recognize March 22, 2025, as Michigan Water Day;

and be it further Resolved, That we commit ourselves to the promotion of public awareness to prevent our precious water from pollution and depletion.

and be it further Resolved,RESOLVED, Michigan must be vigilant about threats to Great World Water Day_SR23_AA_1 fdgxkc 1 Lakes water that come from arid regions of the UnitedUnited States States and must take actions to prevent the artificial loss of water, including strict enforcement of the Great Lakes Compact of 2008 and continued investment in groundwater data collection, monitoring, and long-term conservation measures;

and be it further Resolved,RESOLVED, While we recognize the interconnectedness of humanity and appreciate global challenges, we also recognize our duty as Michiganders in protecting our natural resources and instilling a sense of pride in ourselves and our children for the Great Lakes;

and be it further Resolved,RESOLVED, That we cherish and acknowledge the special responsibility of protecting Michigan’s waters for current and future generations and of assuring access to clean water and sanitation for all Michigan residents;

and be it further Resolved,RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to For Love of Water with our highest esteem.
